European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Maria Gabriel said that mining on the territory of the EU is not prohibited and should comply only with the standard rules of energy consumption.
“If the energy consumed by this industry is produced in accordance with legal norms, there are no legal grounds for prohibiting such activity. Mining is not illegal activity and the European Commission does not track it, “she stressed.
At the same time, the mining industry complies with EU regulations on “energy efficiency, energy sector and greenhouse gas emissions,” she added.
Gabrielle noted that the European Commission will continue to assess the impact of crypto currency mining on the volume of energy consumption, but mentioned that the industry is still concentrated in China, despite the pressure of the authorities.
“We do not exclude that some part of the mining falls on the EU,” she said.
