SETI: cryptoenthusiasts stop us from meeting aliens

The scientist of institute of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) said that “cryptocurrency fever” and popularity of mining negatively affect activity of the organization. In particular, researchers have faced deficiency of the video cards necessary for difficult calculations.

“We need modern GPU, but we can’t just get them. It limits us in search of extraterrestrial life forms. It is a new problem — it has concerned all our orders in recent months. In SETI we try to trace as much as possible frequencies because we don’t know how aliens communicate. Big computing capacities are necessary for this purpose.”

— the head of the research center Berkeley SETI, the radio astronomer Dan Wertheimer stated.

According to him, some telescopes can use up to 100 video cards for data processing from satellite plates which are capable to catch sounds and an echo on all solar system — for example, echoes of natural phenomena like the blowing-up stars.

Now scientists of SETI try to update the equipment in two large observatories: Green Bank in the Western Virginia and Parkes in Australia. However the deficiency of video cards in the market turned out to be a serious problem.
